One of the great things about Royston is the countryside. I just love climbing up to the top of the Heath on a clear day and being able to see right across the town and north to Wimpole and Cambridge. Then of course there’s “the View” at the top of Newmarket Road…
There’s no doubt that Royston is a very safe, community minded place, which makes it great for midweek when all you want is to come in and collapse in front of the TV, or when you might need some help. Come the weekend however, the town is very boring. Shopping consists of getting in the car and driving 15-20 miles to somewhere with decent shops. The High Street is dying a slow, painful death. Nightlife possibilities make a very short list indeed and are overpriced and poor quality in the main, typically in places that close just as your ready to enjoy your night. For a town of the population of Royston, inhabited by people with relatively high incomes, there should be more here. Even the local countryside is not that pretty, flattish farmers fields in the main - it’s hardly the Yorkshire Dales!
What constitutes a “decent shop”? OK, so most of the big chains and department stores aren’t here, but there’s a good collection of specialist, independent shops where you can often find stuff that’s a bit out of the ordinary, and with personal service.
I love the Stationery Cupboard (does that make me an office geek?) Then there’s Ladds, Mica Hardware, Shop in/on the Corner, Days, several ladies/kids clothes shops (where I don’t tend to spend much time), etc…
Now, who’s going to do something interesting with the old Toy Shop…?
I’ve lived here for nearly 25 years. I’ve seen the town change a lot. We’ve lost the pool and the cinema, but we’ve gained the leisure centre and a lovely cobbled High street
So here are a few things I love about Royston:-
The heath for walking, running, dogs, kites, sitting, tree climbing, photography, sun bathing, chilling out. I could go on and on.
The town centre. Ok we have got a few vacant shops but (hopefully) that is temporary. If you can’t drive or walk far you can get everything you need in the town centre. And I love all the independents, Ladds, Shop on the corner, Shop in the corner, Stationery cupboard, Micra hardware, Hallmark, Gary Miles shoe repairers, now there’s a gem, the florists, Days, Godshaws jewellers, Ambience and lots more that I have probably missed out.
And don’t forget that you can get into London in around 35 minutes and around 10 to Cambridge.

Where else can you get all this?
